An engineered septic system is a custom design used when a lot will not support a conventional gravity drainfield, usually because of clay, a high water table, or not enough room. In South Carolina these are Standard 610 designs, they require a registered professional engineer and a licensed soil classifier, and only a Tier 3 licensed installer may legally install them. The engineered design goes to SCDES in South Carolina or the county health department in Georgia. This step takes longer than a conventional permit, and that is normal.
