Standard 610 engineered designs, mound systems and bed systems for lots a conventional drainfield will not serve. In South Carolina, only a Tier 3 installer can legally do this work.

The short answer

An engineered septic system is a custom design used when a lot will not support a conventional gravity drainfield, usually because of clay, a high water table, or not enough room. In South Carolina these are Standard 610 designs, they require a registered professional engineer and a licensed soil classifier, and only a Tier 3 licensed installer may legally install them. We are Tier 3 in South Carolina and certified in Georgia.

When a lot needs an engineered system

A rejected soil evaluation is not a dead lot. It is a different design. Here is what usually causes it in the CSRA.

Piedmont clay

South Carolina classifies soils with massive or platy structure, or expansible clays, as unsuitable for conventional systems. Above the Fall Line, which runs through Augusta, that is a lot of ground.

High water table

If the seasonal water table sits too close to the surface, effluent has nowhere to go. An engineered design lifts and disperses it differently.

Not enough room

Small lots often cannot fit a conventional field plus the required repair area. South Carolina requires you to reserve fifty percent additional area for a future repair.

Shallow rock or restrictive layer

A restrictive horizon close to the surface limits how deep the trenches can go, which changes the whole design.

Steep or awkward topography

Slope affects trench layout and can force a pumped or pressure dosed system rather than gravity.

Commercial or higher flow

Larger daily flows and multi unit properties frequently exceed what a conventional residential design can handle.

How we do it

Engineered work is slower and more technical than a standard install. That is the honest version, and it is why the tier system exists.

    Soil evaluation and diagnosis

    We find out exactly why the lot failed, or why it is likely to. Above the Fall Line that means backhoe pits rather than borings, so the soil profile can actually be read.

    Engineer and soil classifier

    A Standard 610 design is prepared by a registered professional engineer working with a licensed Professional Soil Classifier. We coordinate both. You do not go hunting for them.

    Design selection

    Depending on the site that could be a mound system, a bed system, an elevated infiltration system, or a pressure dosed design. The design follows the soil, not the price list.

    Permit and approval

    The engineered design goes to SCDES in South Carolina or the county health department in Georgia. This step takes longer than a conventional permit, and that is normal.

    Installation and inspection

    Engineered systems have less tolerance for sloppy work than a gravity field. Ours are installed to the stamped design. In South Carolina a Tier 3 installer may self inspect. In Georgia the county inspects before backfill.

What is a Standard 610 engineered septic system?
Standard 610 is the South Carolina designation for a specialized, engineered onsite wastewater system used when a conventional design will not work on a site. It is prepared by a registered professional engineer, informed by a licensed soil classifier, and it can only be installed by a Tier 3 licensed installer.
Why was my lot rejected for a conventional septic system?
Almost always soil. South Carolina treats massive or platy soil structure and expansible clays as unsuitable, and clay needs more absorption area than sand. A high water table, a shallow restrictive layer or simply not enough room for the field plus the required repair area will do it too.
What does Tier 3 certification mean and why does it matter for my job?
South Carolina Regulation 61-56 tiers installer licences by what they are allowed to build. Tier 1 is gravity systems only and cannot repair an existing system. Tier 2 adds pumps, grease traps, commercial and mounded systems. Tier 3 adds Standard 610 engineered designs and allows the installer to self inspect their own installations.
What is a mound system and when is one required?
A mound system raises the drainfield above natural grade in engineered fill, so effluent gets enough treated soil depth even where the natural profile is too shallow or too wet. They are used where the water table is high or a restrictive layer sits close to the surface.
What is a bed system?
A bed system uses a single wide excavated area rather than separate narrow trenches. It can suit sites where the usable area is limited in one dimension. Whether it is appropriate is a soil and design question, not a preference.
Are engineered systems more expensive, and by how much?
Yes, meaningfully. You are paying for engineering, soil classification, more material and often a pump and control panel. We will not put a multiplier on this page because it varies too much by site. We will give you a real number after the evaluation.
Can any septic contractor install an engineered system?
No. In South Carolina only a Tier 3 licensed installer may install a Standard 610 engineered design. If a contractor quotes you one without that licence, that is a problem for your permit and your inspection.
